Why Self-Doubt is a Good Thing

self-doubt

“Self-doubt will ALWAYS invite you to quit.”

Whenever you decide to go to the next level of your life, you’re going to be plagued with self-doubt. It’s part of the deal.

Let me backtrack a little bit. Our brain likes to be as efficient as possible – and change requires work. Change requires creating new neural pathways in our brains.

Whenever we decide we want to make a change, our mind will step in and try to convince us of all the reasons why changing is a bad idea.

You won’t stick to it.

You don’t have time.

It’s too hard.

That’s why most people decide to throw in the towel when it comes to evolving – they don’t want to have to deal with the discomfort and self-doubt that comes along with each new evolution.

But on the other side of every accomplishment you will have so much more confidence – and that confidence can be used to fuel the next thing you want.

There will always be obstacles in front of you. Are you going to get better at overcoming them so you can go and do even bigger things in your life? Or are you going to get better at giving in to self-doubt?

Self-doubt doesn’t mean turn around and go home. It means you’re on the right path!

The Wanting Mentality

wanting

“A lot of people get so hung up on what they can’t have that they don’t think for a second about whether they really want it.” ~Lionel Shriver

Last week, I popped into my local Whole Foods to pick up a few things.

It’s a rare event these days because, well – it’s ridiculously overpriced and I can get high quality groceries at my local supermarket or Trader Joe’s (thank you for finally coming to Colorado).

Five or so years ago, when I was starting my coaching business and had a heap of debt to pay off, I can remember thinking how unfair it was that I couldn’t shop at Whole Foods (or get massages or buy a zillion books on amazon). So I continued to spend and stayed in debt for years.

Now that the credit card is paid off and my business is established, I don’t “want” in the same way. In fact, I probably spend less now than I did all those years ago when I should have been more careful about spending.

My point – it’s the same with food. When we’re trying to lose weight, we sometimes find ourselves in this place of “wanting” because we think we can’t have it. So we go and overeat (because it’s not fair) and keep ourselves stuck in our overweight bodies.

A few days ago, a client asked if I ever feel deprived because I can’t eat whatever I want. My answer was absolutely not.

Just a little something to think about.

The Purpose of Eating

eat

“The purpose of eating is to eat.”

~Thich Naht Hanh

When we eat, we’re usually distracted by our thoughts.

We plan, worry, work, daydream, drive, read, watch, surf.

We think about our commute, the weather, what’s for lunch, that new book we want to read, that yoga class we meant to sign up for.

We think about everything except the food in front of us.

Honestly, when was the last time you ate breakfast and gave it your undivided attention?

Eating can be a sacred ritual. A gift to yourself. A chance to take a break and just be.

For the past few months, I’ve been devoted to practicing mindful eating – focusing 100% on my food. No surfing, no reading, no thinking about my day.

When my mind wanders (which it inevitably does), I gently bring it back to the snack or meal in front of me.

And it’s been awesome.

Here’s why…

  • It’s a delightful little break from the busyness of the day – a sacred and quiet time out
  • More satisfaction from food
  • Food tastes richer + more complex + more interesting
  • It’s easier to stay plugged into hunger and fullness cues
  • Greater satisfaction = less food required
  • It’s fun + pleasurable + calming

Mindful eating is not a diet. It’s about experiencing the pleasure of eating more intensely.

The only thing on your mind when you’re eating ought to be what you’re eating.

XO ~Robyn

Are You Treating the Symptoms?

areyoutreatingthesymptoms

The discomfort of being stuck on the diet – gain it back – diet – gain it back roller coaster is often easier to deal with than the reasons behind our overeating.

  • Our inability to say no.
  • The secret we’re hiding.
  • The job we hate.
  • The fear of getting to know ourselves.
  • The unresolved anger and resentment.

The only way to solve our weight problem for good is to address the reasons we’re turning to food. There is no other way. Your weight is a symptom of a deeper issue. Counting calories is symptom work. It’s a distraction – and quite frankly, a waste of time. Weight coaching is about problem solving.

Is it easy – no. Is it the most amazing work you will ever do – absofreakinglutely!

If you’re serious about losing weight and keeping it off, it’s time to stop asking the same old familiar questions…

  • Why can’t I lose weight?
  • Why don’t diets work for me?

The questions you really need to ask require you to dig deeper…

  • Why am I turning to food when I’m not hungry?
  • What is bothering me besides my weight?
  • How do I manage stress?
  • Why do I always say yes, when I really want to say no?
  • What brings me joy – other than food?
  • Am I willing to forgive myself? Why or why not?
  • Why am I afraid to ask for what I want?
  • What am I avoiding by turning to food?

If you’re ready to stop dieting and start digging in, let’s chat. Discovery Sessions are free – no strings.

Because it’s time to end the struggle for good.
