None of Us Are Okay

It’s been one hell of a year. For me. For everyone – as we continue to live our lives as normally as possible amid an evolving pandemic and all the uncertainty that brings.

My friend Cindy said it perfectly when I met her for coffee last week.

“None of us are okay.”

Amen to that.

I have some sad news to share my friends. Despite all the flights back and forth to New Jersey to help take care of Mom this year. Despite everyone doing the best they could – my sweet Mama lost her battle with cancer a little over a week ago.

I am sad, but I am also so very grateful for the lessons and memories and outpourings of love.

There is so much beauty, even during the most difficult of times. If we’re willing to look for it.

The death of your remaining parent changes you. And those changes can be powerful and positive.

I want to honor my mom by laughing and loving harder. I want to gather up all the love I gave to her and shower it upon the other people in my life who deserve it (including myself).

If you’re feeling a bit bruised and battered by life as well, please join me in dusting yourself off and taking a big deep centering breath. We are Chickadees and we are made of tough stuff.

We can still finish 2021 strong.

💙 Robyn

Behavior Change Doesn’t Have to Suck

Since starting my business, I’ve promised to keep it real.

Health related content tends to lean idealistic. I mean, I’m a dang Health Coach and I find myself rolling my eyes at 90% of the articles and blog posts out there.

One of the reasons (and perhaps THE main reason) so many people give up on behavior change is because they feel like it requires drastic habit transformation. When the Health Coach you’re following on Instagram is only posting pics of being in the gym and eating lean protein and veggies, well – it feels entirely out of reach for most of us.

I’m here to say you can make progress (and sustain that progress) without giving up bread or Hazy IPA’s forever.

To be fair, if your goal is to be fitness competition ripped and have 19% body fat, you’ll need to make some big ass changes (and I am NOT the coach for you). But if your goal is to simply live a healthier life and lose some weight, congratulations – it doesn’t have to suck.

Here’s an example.

A new(ish) client of mine showed up to our first call eating the majority of her dinners from restaurants. She fully expected me to tell her she needed to start meal prepping/cooking at home. There was an audible sigh of relief when I suggested simply ordering slightly healthier options. She put together a list of her favorite restaurants + what she normally orders + ideas for meals that were a little bit healthier, but still satisfying.

In just over two months, she has lost 14 pounds. And she is THRILLED because she is finally losing weight in a way that feels sustainable long-term.

Another example.

Many of my clients began drinking more during the pandemic to manage stress. Heck, even I started drinking more in 2020.

Although the world has begun to open back up, old habits die hard. Sure, you can go cold turkey and try to stop drinking entirely. Or – you can step it down little by little.

Drinking every night of the week? Aim for only six days to start.

Drinking a bottle of wine/night? Try stopping at half a bottle a few days/week. Or better yet – purchase half bottles of wine.

Too much + too fast usually results in throwing in the towel. But we have somehow convinced ourselves that too much + too fast is the ONLY way.

I’m not saying behavior change is easy. It’s not. I’m just saying it doesn’t have to be as hard as we make it out to be.

Make a Move

If I’m being perfectly honest, I’ve felt somewhat paralyzed over the past few months. The pandemic restrictions are lifting (hooray) at the same time I’m making frequent trips to New Jersey to help care for my Mom. Planning ahead has been tricky at best.

  • Should I reactivate my gym membership?
  • Plan for a vacation?
  • Commit to that party?
  • Take my business back to full capacity? (This one is happening SOON!)

It’s a weird place to be. Not knowing is downright disorienting. But indecision and staying stuck feels TERRIBLE.

So last week, I decided to make one simple decision around fitness. To commit to Pilates twice/week when in Colorado.

My first Pilates session felt like an act of self-love. Like an important vote cast in favor of my health and well-being.

The benefit of making a move (ANY move) when you’re feeling stuck is that it creates momentum and can put in place a chain of events. That single Pilates session inspired a search for my Fitbit which is happily living on my wrist again (and will FOR SURE motivate me to get more steps). Feeling stronger + fitter and moving more will elevate my mood and positively impact additional choices.

If you’re feeling paralyzed/unsure/stuck, ask yourself what your next move is. Big. Small. Doesn’t matter. Just take action – and let the momentum carry you forward.

Welcoming Ourselves Home

Self-love.

How many books + blog posts + podcasts have been dedicated to this topic?

Writing about self-love is easy. Accepting and loving ourselves all day, every day is HARD. Like really hard.

While surfing around on Brain Pickings today, this pop up appeared…

I (of course) clickety clicked because who doesn’t want to know what it means to, “(really, finally) love yourself”.

“Love After Love” by Derek Walcott is exquisite.

Is it a poem about (as the pop up says) what it means to really, finally love yourself? Maybe. I mean, the beauty of poetry is that it’s open to interpretation, right?

Some say this poem is about healing after someone has broken our heart. But I like to think it’s about healing after we break our own heart with unkind words or actions. About unconditional forgiveness and always welcoming ourselves home.

Absolute self-love + acceptance has always felt like an impossible goal. But unconditional welcoming home – now that’s a notion I can embrace wholeheartedly. And maybe that’s what it means to (really, finally) love yourself.

LOVE AFTER LOVE
by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
